One of my dreams as a parent is that my children will love books and reading. I’m sure that is a dream for many of you reading this blog post. The process of achieving this starts when your children are very young. As young as a newborn even. You read to them every day. Eventually, they become mobile and can get to their books themselves. Your heart will beam seeing them pull out a book and turn the pages all by themselves for the first time. Our daughter, Ellie, has gotten to the this stage of loving to look at books. She even has her favorites that she brings to us to read over and over. Currently, her favorites are interactive books. Here are the 10 best interactive board books for toddlers that Ellie loves.

Never Touch A…

Ellie loves any book that is a touch-and-feel book. She loves the different textures. She’ll sit and run her fingers over each page for quite some time. One of her favorites is Never Touch a Porcupine. It is one of several different titles of the same kind of book. We have two of them and she loves them both. These books use rhyming words to teach about not touching wild animals in a fun and engaging way.

Poke-A-Dot

I love these books because you can work on several things with your little one while you read them to them. It works their fine motor skills by popping the dots. You can work on counting as they poke the dots too. They are pretty big board books therefore, they don’t work well in a diaper bag.

My First Family Album

This isn’t a book so to speak, but it acts similar to one. My sister got it for my daughter on her 1st Christmas at 6 months old. Almost two years later she still enjoys looking through it. This album has 17 pages for you to insert 4×6 pictures into. You could also insert notes or your writings to read to your child making it more like a book. Our daughter loves to turn the pages and see all the faces of the people she loves the most.

Hi-Five Farm!

Our daughter’s occupational therapist gave her this book for her first Christmas. She knew it would encourage our daughter to be interactive with books. Each page has an animal with a giant foot that the reader is to hi-five. It’s a fun little book! Consequently, it caused our daughter to hi-five and interact with the book.

Do Cows Meow?

This book is one we had with our older boys. It was such a favorite of the boys’ that we kept it long enough that six years later we still have it for our daughter. It asks goofy questions about what sounds different animals make. Then you lift the flap that is the animals mouth and discover the sound that the animal actually makes. The animals’ mouths are pretty goofy looking too! Our daughter loves to put her head in their mouth as if the animal is eating her!

Around the Farm by Eric Carle

This book takes the beautiful illustrations of Eric Carle and adds the sounds of the animals. The reader pushes a button and hears what each animal sounds like. It’s great for learning animal sounds and fine motor skills. Pushing the buttons to hear the sounds does take some fine motor strength.

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

There are a few different versions of this book. The book that I’m listing has a little square on each page with a slide to move back and forth that shows what is on the next page. This is another great book that incorporates learning colors, animals, and fine motor skills. Our daughter loves to move the slide back and forth.

Baby Touch and Feel: Fluffy Animals

There are several of these Baby Touch and Feel books. We have two of them and any of them would be good. Our daughter loves to touch the sensory parts of each picture. I like that they do not all have the same sensory feel. Some pictures are soft and fluffy, some are rough, and some are smooth.

Ellie in Color

This book is not interactive in that it has something physical about it that a reader can touch or do. We love it for four reasons. First, the main character has the same name as our daughter. Second, it has really pretty illustrations. Third, the text is very simple. Lastly, it talks about colors. We make it interactive by teaching our daughter the sign language for each color.

I Can, Can You?

This is another book that is not interactive in the physical sense. But we love it mostly because all of the pictures in the book are of little kids who have down syndrome. Ellie seems to know this because she loves to pull this book out and look at it. She does the sign language for some of the activities that the book mentions too.
