Learning the United States State Abbreviations : The Fun Way!
Every child in the United States has a year in school where they learn about the states. They learn the state names, where they are located, their abbreviations and capitals, and other facts about them. Usually this happens around 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade. My two younger boys learned about the states this past school year. I wanted them to have more than worksheets to use to learn these facts so I created a few resources for them to use. What are Clip Cards?
Clip cards, when used for learning in a school setting, are little cards that have a question or picture at the top and then 2, or 3, or 4 possible answers underneath. Each possible answer is in it’s own little box. The student is given a clothes pin and they put the clothes pin on the answer they think is correct.
What are State Abbreviation Clip Cards?
State abbreviation clip cards follow the example above. They have a picture of one state and the state name at the top. There are 3 possible state abbreviations underneath the picture but only one possible answer is correct. The student puts a clothes pin on the abbreviation they think matches the state name. Why are Clip Cards a Great Resource?
Clip cards are great resources because you can give the cards and the pins to the student and they can work on it independently. It’s self-guiding, therefore, the teaching can work on other things. Once the student has gone through all of the clip cards the teacher can check their work and easily give any incorrect ones back and have the student correct them.
